The new Subaru XV is a curious thing. Despite the styling iniquities visited on the likes of the once-wholesome Forester and Impreza of late, there is still a tremendous groundswell of goodwill towards Subaru out there.
Which makes it all the more difficult to fathom why, far from trying to rekindle the interest of its core customer base by vigorously re-assessing its existing model line-up, the company has decided to fashion a C-SUV and take a punt at a segment that’s already as busy as cheese. This isn’t in fact, the company’s first XV, merely the first we’ve seen in the UK - the predecessor little more than an Impreza in plastic nappies. This specimen’s bodywork (and nappies) has been worked a little harder and, like a well filled sandwich made from extra-thin bread, carries off the neat trick of combining raised ground clearance and the lowest roofline of any car in the class with acceptable front and rear seat headroom.
Force-feeding a goose may elicit entirely delicious results, but I’m not sure the same applies to an Impreza: handsome enough from the front (though largely indistinguishable from rivals), quite elegant in profile and a sight too Dodge Caliber astern, the XV is unlikely to cause offence as long as paint colour is chosen with care.

The Yukon is the workhorse SUV in the GMC lineup, and in Denali trim, makes it a luxury SUV. It’s powered by GM’s Vortech 6.0-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management that seamlessly shuts down from eight cylinders to four cylinders whenever less power is needed. But it’s the two electric motors inside the CVT two-mode transmission that make this Yukon a hybrid, by moving the vehicle with electric power only at slow speeds, or with a combination of electric and gas, and then on to full gas power when up to speed.
Despite the hybrid name, however, the motor is still extremely capable and produces an impressive 332 horsepower and 337 ft-lbs of torque and can tow up to 6,000 pounds (6,200 lbs. for the 2-wheel drive version). Perhaps that won’t let you tow your 31-foot speedboat, or 4-horse trailer, but it’s plenty for towing motorcycles, ATVs or watercraft.

When the first Audi TT hit the market in 1998, its design was nothing short of revolutionary. But now, rumor has it that Audi is preparing to launch an all-new third-generation model at the rapidly approaching Tokyo Motor Show, and our interests our piqued.
Little in the way of details is known as to the direction Audi is preparing to take with the new TT, but sources expect it to go slightly upmarket in order to make room for a small

Kia expands racing program with Rio-based B-spec race car. Of all the things that you could call a Kia, "racy" isn't the one that jumps first to mind. But the budget-oriented Korean automaker has been competing in Grand-Am, and is stepping things up (or down) a notch with the racer you see here.
Built for the B-Spec showroom stock class, this Rio five-door has been fitted with the requisite safety features (like a stripped-out cabin and roll cage) but little else. Kinetic Motorsports did the preparation work with an eye on numerous different racing series, but we'll have to wait another couple of weeks until SEMA when the car's set to be unveiled for all the details.

Despite the on-again, off-again rumors about its potential voyage to the United States, the Suzuki Swift still remains a tasty piece of forbidden fruit. A shame, too, especially since this new Sport version sounds like it'd be quite the enjoyable steer.
The Swift Sport was first previewed by the S-Concept that debuted back in Geneva, but now packs 134 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque routed to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Those aren't earth-shattering numbers, but in a vehicle this tiny (and lightweight), we imagine it to be pretty engaging from behind the wheel. Think Mazda2, but more powerful.

Ferrari does it. McLaren does, too. Williams and Renault are expected to go at it again. Lots of Formula One teams are into making road cars, and now Red Bull apparently wants a piece of the action.
We first brought you news of a potential tie-up between the Red Bull Racing team and Infiniti a couple of months ago. Nissan's luxury division sponsors the world-champion, and the team's star driver Sebastian Vettel acts as the brand's ambassador. But what would a partnership on an actual marketable road car amount to?
It may still be too early to say. An upgrade of the G37 to near BMW M3 levels of performance could be in the cards, maybe a similar treatment on the M37 sedan, or they could wait until Infiniti's new premium sporty hatch comes around. One way or another, says CAR Magazine, both parties appear to be keen on the opportunity.
Infiniti, for one, is eager to boost its profile, particularly in Europe where its brand recognition is still relatively low. Red Bull, meanwhile, is looking for an outlet for its technical expertise on a project outside of F1 beyond the X1 prototype in GT5. The collaboration of Red Bull and Infiniti engineers could be facilitated by the fact that their R&D bases in the UK are in close proximity to each other, which more than anything else could give the project wings.

Just in this morning: The DeltaWing concept car will run at Le Mans in 2012. That's next year, so we're clear. 2010 Suzuki Kizashi
The DeltaWing is one of the ideas for a future IndyCar racer in 2010. But that series went with incumbent chassis maker Dallara, and the futuristic DeltaWing design has been in limbo.
Highcroft Racing will partner with Dan Gurney's All American Racers for the project, and American Le Mans Series founder Don Panoz is an adviser.
And, more Le Mans news this today. A Honda CR-Z will run in a demonstration of future cars this weekend, including the Nissan Leaf. This is the CR-Z outfitted in competition trim from last year's SEMA show.
Now let's talk news. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety just released a report today about death rates in accidents. Drivers of the Nissan 350Z, the Nisan Titan and Chevy's Aveo and Cobalt had the highest rates. The report looked at fatalities in 2005 to 2008 model-year vehicles.
The lowest rates were the Audi A6 and the Mercedes-Benz E-class all-wheel-drive models. Anne McCartt is a vice president for IIHS and helped lead the research. She was profiled in AutoWeek magazine as a Mover & Shaker in April.

European luxury and sports car makers are no strangers to four-cylinders--they just rarely bring them to the U.S. BMW changes that this year, however, with the introduction of the four-cylinder Z4 sDrive28i. Sporting 2.0-liters of displacement and a twin-scroll turbocharger, it packs 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.
The new twin-scroll turbo four replaces the naturally-aspirated straight-six Z4 sDrive30i model for the U.S., but few are likely to miss the six: the four is more powerful and more fuel efficient. Plus it comes with all the fun of a turbocharger.
How much fun will that turbo make? Peak power now comes at just 5,000 rpm instead of the 6,500 previously, but peak torque is available from 1,250 rpm and stays there until red line.
In addition to being more powerful and fuel efficient, the turbo four is actually lighter than the six it replaces, too. BMW hasn't stated any official fuel economy figures, but it expects gains of 20 percent when paired with the eight-speed automatic, equating to about 22/34 mpg ratings for the new four.
That last line introduces a glimmer of hope for the availability of a six-speed manual gearbox, something the Z4 has lacked in its most recent iteration. Of course, it could just be that we're reading into it what we want to see. We'll have to wait until closer to the car's launch later this year for more details. One such tuner is Renntech who have announced a new carbon aero package for the CLK 63 Black Series. The package includes a full carbon fiber front splitter, rear diffuser, DTM rear wing, carbon air box with vacuum chamber, and front carbon brake air ducts. The price for the entire package is $15,290.

Ford's legendary F-Series premiered in the late '40s with the F1, the F2, and the F3. The F1 was a ½ ton light pickup while the 2 and the 3 represented steps up in size (the F2 was ¾ ton and the F3 was a Heavy-Duty version of the F2). This was still in the somewhat "early" days of the American pickup truck and the F-Series represented a marked improvement over Ford's previous entrants, even offering a V8 with the first generation that threw out 100 horsepower. And over the next 30 years, the F-Series would evolve even more, seeing changes to not only the drive train, but of course to the size and shape of the model. In 1975, the Ford F-150 debuted as a half-ton pickup, taking up the roster spot between Ford's F100 and F250. The truck was an instant success, accounting for over a third of all Ford F-Series truck sales in its first year on the road. It would also be the beginning to one of Ford's most prized accomplishments in the history of the company.

Once the 1980s hit, the F150 was a primetime part of the show. They were certain styling changes to the truck, most notably the hood was angled towards the rear and the SuperCab's windows were now split to show off the appearance of twin windows. In 1983, the engine options began to take on added size. A 7.5L V8 and 6.7L diesel V8 were offered. This was also the last year Ford would assemble the F100, meaning that the F150 was now the base truck.
1987 bought on even more changes. The front-end displayed a rectangular grille and flush headlights that required only removing the bulb upon replacement, not the entire headlight. Anti-lock rear brakes were also added, as was a 4.9L inline 6-cylinder engine with fuel injection. Within a year, all engine options would be fuel-injected. In 1990, "Touch Drive" was implemented. "Touch Drive" allowed drivers to go into 4-wheel drive mode by simply pushing a dashboard-mounted button. As the '90s progressed, the Ford F150 became even more aerodynamically styled. The nose was smoothed out and the bumpers were slanted back. The previous base F150 was the Custom, but come 1993, the XL took over.
By this point, Ford F-Series trucks had become the highest selling model in the industry with the F150 leading the way. That made the need for safety features even more pressing. In 1994, a driver's side airbag and side door beams became standard. 1995 saw the arrival of the Eddie Bauer F150 Edition. Outfitted with alloy wheels, power windows and locks, and painted in two-tone colors, it was a "luxury" version of the F150 and did better than expected in terms of overall sales. Currently, the Ford F150 is still at the top of the heap. It is equipped with a 4.6L V8 (245 horsepower), a higher output 4.6L V8 (292 horsepower), or a 5.4L V8 (310 horsepower). There are seven trim levels available covering bed lengths, cab sizes, and driveline configurations, giving interested drivers of this truck more than enough possibilities to choose from. Even in during a climate when sales of trucks dwindled due to the economic downturn, the F150 still held its ground. Now bolder and more convenient than ever, the Ford F150 still provides a fistful of results with the legacy to back it up.

At this week’s 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicles Show, Volkswagen will debut the VW Pickup Concept, a double-cabin pickup truck that rumors referred to as the VW Robust or Taro. The concept will actually be a preview of the production version, which is currently under development. The concept looks very interesting, especially with that ‘beach patrol’ theme, highlighted by the blue LED lights on the roof and the SAR (search and rescue) stickers on the side of its body.

No word about the specs, but, according to the German carmaker, the pickup production is scheduled to start in the fall of 2009 at the VW plant in Pachero, Argentina and sales will follow soon after, in South America, South Africa, Australia and Europe. Nothing mentioned about the US market, but we definitely expect the car to be available to across the ocean.

So, VW gets ready to enter new grounds with this pickup truck. In a market where large cars are not so attractive any more, this might look like a bold move, but, equipped with the right engine and powertrain, this car might really work for the German giant. Car grills, billet grills.

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. is curbing production in China as sales slow in the once-booming market, a company spokesman said Monday. ADVERTISEMENT

"As sales growth has become slower than we projected earlier, we are adjusting output," Toyota spokesman Toshiaki Hori said, without disclosing the extent of the production cutbacks.

The Nikkei economic daily reported that Toyota plans a 10-percent cut in production at its joint venture in China with Guangzhou Automobile because demand is falling due to tighter credit and falling share prices.

The auto giant has already curbed production of its Yaris small passenger car, the daily said without naming its sources.

The Guangdong plant, which produces Camry and Yaris cars, has an annual output capacity of 200,000 vehicles a year.

The Japanese automaker has also been reducing production in such countries as the United States, Britain and Poland amid a global economic slowdown.

The group, which has suspended some production lines in the United States for three months as a result of the market downturn, said last week it had cut global output by 15.5 percent in August.

Toyota, on course to overtake General Motors as the world's top selling automaker, has been expanding aggressively in emerging markets to make up for sluggish sales at home and tougher conditions in the United States.

Toyota said in June that it would invest about 380 million dollars in a new production line at the Guangdong plant that would raise annual capacity to 320,000 vehicles by mid-2009.

According to Kia, a 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine will be the most powerful, followed by two 1.6-liters—one gasoline, one diesel—that complete the lineup. The automaker is also confirming that the Soul will only be available as a five-door hatch in front-drive trim.

As for the photographs themselves, compared with previous shots, they show more production-looking headlights and less bling. We like the two-tone interior. And while the back is very reminiscent of the Scion xB, the front is rounder and has a more conventionally proportioned nose than the snub front of the xB. With the dawn of the automobile age still some 27 years in the future, Charles Dickens probably didn’t have motorsports in mind when he penned the opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities, published in 1859. Still, after herding a GT-R through the 2008 Tire Rack One Lap of America, I found those words relevant to this first real-world competitive showdown for Nissan’s new supercoupe. And I have to confess right here on the starting grid that the Dickensian mantra applied more to your humble narrator than to the car.

With a couple of small asterisks, the car was formidable. The driver’s score sheet, however, was mixed, more in the best-of-times, worst-of-times realm, including one episode of no times whatsoever. Zero. Zeros are costly when others are racking up points.

I can explain. But before the excuses, some orientation for those who have somehow missed the last quarter-century. This was the 25th One Lap, the spiritual successor to the old Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, better known as the Cannonball Run.

The brainchild of Car and Driver legend Brock Yates, there were five Cannonballs between 1971 and ’79. The rules were simple: no rules. You drove from the East Coast starting point to Redondo Beach, California—some 3000 miles—as fast as you could go.

One Lap of America is the Cannonball sequel and doesn’t flout traffic regs. At least not openly. Here’s how it works today: Kicking off and concluding with runs on the Tire Rack skidpad, first one wet, second one dry, at Rack HQ in South Bend, Indiana, the tour visits a number of motorsports facilities (eight this year) during the course of a weeklong run. All scoring is based on time trials—16 this year—at various tracks. There’s usually a drag-racing event and sometimes a paved oval to run around, but most of the action is on road circuits where the cars are staged at 20-second intervals, five cars in a group, three laps from a standing start. Passing is rare, and results are determined by a driver’s total time for the three laps. Failing to finish a run nets zero points. There are also circumstances—autocross courses defined by cones, for example—where penalties are levied for hitting a marker, usually 10 seconds, though it’s also possible to be scored as a DNF on a cone course. As we shall see.

Points are based on the NASCAR system, five for each finishing position. Max point potential is five times the number of cars in the event; in this case 72, or 360 points for first in a particular trial, 355 for second, and so on.
